Volunteerism

Volunteers help to make all the programs and services offered by the Center possible. From supporting Project Q as an adult mentor to staffing the front desk to assisting with fundraising efforts, volunteers work closely with Center staff and have been a key element in the successful development of the Center.

IN HONOR OF OUR VOLUNTEERS

Both the Board members and staff of the Center celebrate all our volunteers, whether they have just started or been around for years. However, we are delighted to—without them we could not reach our goals.
We welcome the following volunteers who have recently joined us:

Whitney R.
Jennifer S.
Jacob B.
Joel C.
Jeremiah G.
Ryan Spies
Ryan S.
Swanzie N.
Cameron W.

The following tireless volunteers have given their time and energy to the Center above and beyond the call of duty. They are the reason the Center can flourish.
Anthony D.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

Please contact Dave Martin, Operations Manager, for more information about these volunteer opportunities at 414-292-3065 or e-mail him at dmartin@mkelgbt.org.

Anti-Violence Project (AVP)

AVP addresses the impact of domestic abuse, sexual assault and hate crimes on LGBT people by raising community awareness and connecting victims to LGBT-friendly services.

Front Desk Reception/Library

For Center programs to function smoothly, front desk volunteers sit at the reception desk in the lobby of the Center to ensure that all visitors find the appropriate programs, meeting rooms and staff. Responsibilities for front desk volunteers include answering phones, directing people to meetings, monitoring of the CyberCenter, and, when necessary, closing the Center in the evenings after programs conclude.

The LGBT Community Library holds over 2,000 LGBT-related books, both fiction and nonfiction. Library volunteers help to maintain the collection. Volunteer shifts would be at the same time as frontdesk volunteering.

LGBT Breast Health Program

This program focuses on developing breast health awareness for the LGBT community and providing resources for people who cannot afford a breast cancer screening.

LGBT Tobacco Cessation & Smoke-Free Space

The Center offers information and resources to fight nicotine addiction and encourages commitment to the elimination of second-hand smoke. As a volunteer with this program, you can become a health promoter working one-on-one with LGBT people who want to quit smoking, or a quit-smoking group facilitator in our Rm2Breathe session group.

Philanthropy & Special Events

The Philanthropy Department, which designs and executes all fundraising and friend-raising activities at the Center, regularly seeks Philanthropy and Special Events volunteers. Some volunteers maintain our membership database and coordinate mailing membership renewal notices or other special announcements, whereas others help to plan, design, and staff such special events as our annual gala, annual membership meetings, holiday online auctions, and Mix n’ Mingle social gatherings.

Please see the Front Desk Calendar below for shift schedules.
